Sarinah is the better Indonesian-products answer. Grand Indonesia is the easiest first-time mall because it is recognizable, central and broad. If your hotel is in Thamrin, Menteng, Bundaran HI, Karet or Sudirman, it can cover lunch, coffee, supermarket needs, pharmacy-style errands, clothing, gifts, toilets and a driver pickup in one stop.
Pair it with Plaza Indonesia only if you want the luxury comparison or a more polished restaurant. Pair it with Sarinah if you need gifts or Indonesian products. Do not add Thamrin City unless shopping is the point of the afternoon.
For a simple central plan, do this: hotel, Grand Indonesia or Plaza Indonesia lunch, Sarinah for gifts, then leave the mall zone before you become one of those people who spends the whole day comparing escalators.

Thamrin City is better if you want to compare fabric, batik-style clothes and modest fashion more actively. The trade-off is effort. You need to look, ask, inspect, compare and decide whether the price and quality make sense. A market-style environment can be more rewarding, but it also takes more attention.
If you do not understand batik tulis, batik cap and printed fabric, do not pay collector prices. Buy what you like at a price that feels fair. Respect the craft without pretending you became a textile expert after ten minutes.

Do not choose a hotel solely because a map says it is near a mall. Check the actual walking route, road crossings, rain exposure and pickup points. In Jakarta, two places can look close and still feel annoying on foot.
The MRT can help, especially along the north-south corridor. The Jakarta city MRT page lists stations from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI and notes the service connects South and Central Jakarta. Still, station access is only part of the trip. The last walk matters.
