Best place to stay without a scooter
Stay central if this is your first Ubud trip. You can walk to food, markets, basic sights, massage, cafes and some yoga studios. It will be busy, but busy and useful beats quiet and stranded.
Central Ubud is best if you want Ubud Palace, Saraswati Temple, Ubud Art Market, Monkey Forest Road, cafes, restaurants, spas and pickups within practical reach.
Penestanan can work if your hotel is near the cafes and you are comfortable with short walks. It is calmer, but exact lane and access matter.
Nyuh Kuning can work for families or calmer stays near the Monkey Forest side of town. It is less central for the main town core, but often less chaotic than the busiest streets.
Sayan, Kedewatan and outer villas are good for resorts, river views, pools and quiet. They are weak if you want casual spontaneous dinners without transport.

A villa north of town can be beautiful and still be a bad no-scooter base for dinner.

Use a private driver for multi-stop days. That includes rice terraces, temples, waterfalls, rafting, craft villages, coffee stops, viewpoints and anything where parking and return transport are annoying.
A driver is not fancy. It is often the practical tool.

Grab, Gojek and taxis in Ubud
App rides and taxis can be useful for short hops, but pickup realities vary by area and time. Some hotels have clearer pickup points than others. Some streets are awkward. Some drivers may ask you to walk to a better spot.
This is not automatically a scam. Sometimes it is a local access issue, a narrow road, traffic management or a driver trying to make pickup possible.
Drop-off is often easier than pickup. Ask your hotel for the best pickup point instead of assuming the address pin is enough. If the main road is easier than your lane, use the main road. For dinner, rain or late returns, arrange the ride back before you leave or ask the venue/hotel what usually works.
